Your options: pole-and-wire, deer fence or cattle-panel

Pole-and-wire fence is wood posts with wire stretched between them. It is the plain way to mark a property line, close in a pasture or cross a lot of open ground. Which wire goes on depends on what you are keeping in or out.

Deer fence keeps deer off gardens, orchards and young trees. Deer can clear most yard fences, so a single wire deer fence is usually built about 8 feet tall. If rabbits are a problem too, smaller mesh along the bottom helps.

Cattle-panel view fence closes in a yard without blocking the view, which is why it suits bluff and valley lots. Some people call it hog-wire fence. Beau's spec on a recent one: "4x4 cedar posts" and "black powder coated cattle panels framed out with 2x4 cedar & solar post cap lighting."

Wire mesh can also be added along a rail fence to keep dogs and small stock in. Ask Beau on your estimate if you want it.

What changes the price

Two wire fences the same length can price out very differently. Here is what moves the number:

  • Corners, ends and gates. Wire is stretched tight, so each one needs a braced post assembly, often an H-brace. More corners, more braces.
  • Post type. Steel T-posts usually cost less and go in faster. Wood posts cost more and look more finished.
  • Height and wire. Deer fence takes taller posts and more wire. Heavier wire and thicker galvanizing cost more up front and last longer.
  • Ground and access. Rock, hardpan and slope slow down post setting, and so does a line a truck can't reach.
  • Clearing and tear-out. Brush on the line or old wire to pull out adds time.
  • Cattle-panel fence. A cedar frame around every panel means more lumber and labor per foot than plain wire. Post cap lights add to it.

Questions to ask on every quote

Ask these on every quote:

  • What posts, how far apart, and how deep?
  • How are the corners, ends and gates braced?
  • What wire, what gauge, and how tall?
  • Who calls 811 for the utility locate?
  • Is tear-out and haul-away of the old fence in the price?
  • What is in writing: materials, gates and cleanup?

How long it lasts, and the upkeep

Steel T-posts and galvanized wire don't rot. Wood posts are the weak spot in wet ground. On irrigated pasture or a ditch bank, a wood post rots fastest right at the ground line.

Cedar weathers to silver-grey if you leave it alone. Stain or sealer keeps the color longer. Powder-coated panels hold up well, but touch up a deep scratch before it rusts.

Once or twice a year, walk the line. Look for a leaning brace, slack wire, and weeds or brush growing into it. Keep sprinklers off wood posts. Got Fence does repairs as well as new fence, so call if a section is down.

What happens on the estimate

The estimate is free. Call Beau at (208) 957-1761.

It helps to know roughly how long the run is, where you want gates, and what you are keeping in or out: deer, dogs, horses or cattle. If you know where your property pins are, show us. Ask Beau on your estimate what wire, post spacing and bracing he would use on your ground, and why.

Beau has built fences under the Got Fence name since 2007, first in California, and in Idaho since 2023. We are registered with the State of Idaho as a contractor, RCE-65327.

Questions people ask

T-posts or wood posts for deer fence?

Both work. T-posts usually cost less and go in fast. Wood posts look more finished and make stiffer corners and gate posts. Wood at the corners with T-posts in between is a common mix. Ask Beau on your estimate which fits your ground.

Will cattle-panel fence hold my dog?

It depends on the dog and the panel. Opening sizes vary, and a small dog or puppy can slip through wider ones. Tell Beau about your dog on the estimate.

Is wire fence safe for horses?

It depends on the wire. A horse can catch a hoof in wide openings, and barbed wire is a poor match for horses. Small-mesh no-climb horse wire or a rail fence is the safer pick. See our horse and ranch rail page.

Do I need to call 811 before a fence goes in?

Yes. Idaho law requires a call to 811 at least two business days before digging, and that duty sits with whoever does the digging. 811 marks the utility companies' lines, not private ones. Your well line, irrigation pipe or buried power to a shop won't be marked, so flag those yourself.

Who figures out where the property line is?

Usually the owner. Find your corner pins or hire a surveyor before posts go in, and talk to your neighbor first on a shared line. If you are in an HOA, get its approval in writing.
